Estepona summary About Estepona, Costa del Sol

Estepona, Spain

Bearing in mind the population triples in the peak times of the year, Estepona is a classic example of how you can welcome tourism without spoiling a town. Estepona is a charming old town with narrow twisty streets of two storey whitewashed houses, a great range of shops and pleasant plazas to sit and enjoy a drink or meal. It remains a very Spanish town with almost no English pubs or souvenir shops.

On the waterfront Estepona Marina has a fantastic range of boats to admire, with plenty of cafes and restaurants to lounge in. There are three beaches to choose from, all of which offer a good range of watersports.

In the town there are four museums and many archaeological sites to see and as well as colourful parks and gardens. Wonderful parades and celebrations take place particularly January 5th; early May; July Feria; August 15th & New Years Eve. Estepona is a truly delightful place to stay and enjoy "real" Spain.

Recommendations Owner's Tips...

There is plenty to do in and around Estepona which has a much more authentic atmosphere than many of the other resorts of the Costa del Sol with typical Andalusian whitewashed houses and balconies decorated with flowers. For the early risers there is a fish market at the harbour but you must be there by 6am as it tends to be finished by 7am. The 18th century Church of Los Remedios in the Plaza de San Francisco was once a Franciscan monastery. The Torre Reloj (clock tower) has organised tours every Thursday starting from the tourist office. The bull ring, on the outskirts of the town, has four museums in it one of which has has an interesting collection of bullfighting memorabilia. Ronda, famous for its incredible gorge provides a fabulous day out. The little known town of Casares is a typical white Andalusian town set on a hillside and you can find out how to get there from the tourist office in Estepona.

For the kids there's Selwo Aventura, a safari park where you can see animals such as tigers, lions and elephants, go on a camel ride, have a go at archery and walk on the overhead walkways.

Golf, of course, is a big pastime in this area. There are many world class Costa del Sol golf courses around Estepona. The mild, dry winter climate make it a pleasure to play golf all through the year. If you do intend to use any of the courses do remember to bring your handicap certificate with you as it will be almost impossible to find a course which does not require it.

One of the nearest golf courses is the EL Paraiso Golf Club. Everywhere you look the views are magnificent, from many holes you can see the blue of the mediterranean and there is always the backdrop of the dramatic mountains. Gary Player has used these natural resources brilliantly to create one of the best designed courses on the Costa del Sol. The clubhouse sits in the heart of the course, looking onto the 18th green and was created out of a number of country “casitas” giving it an intimate and friendly ambience helped by the attentive service of the “camareros”. Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer!

Estepona, like all other Andalusian towns, takes the opportunity to celebrate and party as much as possible. Three of its main festivals are San Isidro celebrated on May 15th with processions and a party in the countryside, the local town festival celebrated during the first week of June in the fairground and the festival of the Virgen del Carmen on July 16th when a statue of the virgen is carried out to sea and back on fishing boats.
