The city of Huelva dates back some 3000 years, and today it’s a busy, commercial place. However there are some real treats to be found here, including the history of Christopher Columbus and his connection to these parts. A good starting place would be La Rabida, which is to the south of the city across the river Tinto. It is here that Christopher Columbus stayed and planned his trips. The Barrio Reina Victoria district is quite something; houses here were built in an English style and were named after Queen Victoria. The families of people who worked for a mining company lived here.
Huelva is an industrial city, however it’s good climate and nearby beaches encourages visitors during the summer months. It has a good range of restaurants and shops, with pedestrianised streets, allowing you to take in the sights of the city at your own pace.
The beautiful city of Seville is only an hours drive along the quiet motorway as well as the National Park of Doñana. Other resorts of Islantilla, La Antilla and Isla Cristina are all within 20 minutes drive . The bustling town of Ayamonte is within 25 mins drive and is situated on the border with Portugal on the River Guardiana, a ferry runs frequently to and from the town of Vila Real San Antonio in Portugal.
Sailing, wind-surfing, kite-surfing and fishing are available year-round. At nearby Cartaya there is a waterpark open June to September, and an all year round Karting track for adults and children.
From June to September the area comes alive with beach bars offering fabulously fresh seafood and fish as well as welcome cold drinks and beers at very reasonable prices.
There are showers available on most of the beaches and lifeguards at the busier areas. As the beaches are so vast, you can always find yourself a quieter spot if you prefer it or plan a picnic among the dunes which fringe the beaches. The beauty of the area is that there are no high-rise buildings on the beaches and they retain their natural, tranquil feel.
There are a large number of excellent bars, restaurants and cafes within a short distance of the townhouse. Many offer excellent local Tapas at a very good price - look out for daily specials of a selection of tapas and a drink. El Portil, El Rompido and Punta Umbria have a fantastic choice of restaurants in every price range. There are several local supermarkets, a bakery and grocers - and a Carrefour hypermarket in Cartaya - about 15 mins away.
