Owner's Tips

Very close to amenities, especially Mahon and Es Castell (fishing village) where you will be spoilt for choice for reasonably priced restaurants and bars, etc.

Es Castell is situated at the mouth of the Port of Mao and framed by two attractive coves, Cales Fonts and Cala Corb, and is the easternmost town in Spain, and the first to see sunrise.

It is a town steeped in history and military connections, evidence of which can still be seen today. Originally named Georgetown by the English who built it in square-block military style, it was later renamed Real Villa de San Carlos (Villacarlos) when the island reverted to Spanish rule in 1782. It is now known as Es Castell (The Castle) because of it’s proximity to the previously demolished Fort San Felip.

The town’s history is strongly reflected in its layout and architecture. The most obvious is the central square, previously the parade ground, which is dominated by the elegant facades of the clock tower of the 18th century town hall and military barracks (now a Military Museum and open to the public).

The more gruesome-minded like to inform us (falsely?) that the cove adjacent to the square is named Cala Corb (corpse) - because the currents had a tendency to wash up the bodies of the escapees from the quarantine islands in the harbour!

Es Castell has plenty to offer its residents and visitors alike in the way of shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. There are market days twice a week, and the town has its own annual fiesta, the Fiesta de San Jaume, at the end of July. Many of the bars and restaurants are situated around the two coves, Cala Corb, and more especially Cales Fonts, and many are in converted caves around the harbour - a superb atmospheric setting. Many of these caves were believed to have been carved out by the earliest inhabitants around 2500 BC.

A turning off the roundabout at the entrance to Es Castell leads to the prehistoric village of Trepuco and just 1Km from Son Vilar. There can be found a massive talyot (conical mound of stones - some have an inside chamber and passage) and taula , (which is unique to Menorca – a huge upright stone slab, supporting another large slab lying horizontally across it). Mystery still surrounds their purpose, and indeed how the got there! In an adjacent field to the west, part of the village has been excavated. The monuments were originally built during the second millenium BC, and are well worth a visit. Views of Es Castell, Cales Fonts, and the talyot at Trepuco can be seen by visiting: http://www.menorcaholidayvilla.co.uk/escastellhistory.html

If you plan to visit Menorca, perhaps for a holiday, then Es Castell is certainly a destination that should be on your list. There are many holiday villas to rent in Menorca, but villas in Es Castell are particularly popular because of local amenities and easy access to gorgeous beaches.

What we love about our property
The villa is situated in a peaceful village with no passing traffic, yet it is only 1km from all the amenities of Es Castell (fishing village with some terrific bars and restaurants) and also 1km from the capital Mahon (with even more terrific bars and restaurants)!

The villa has developed over the years, including the splendid pool and air conditioning. Each year I'm always adding some extra facility, based on feedback from my great tenants. This year I'm converting the garden lighting to the latest LED's, so your evenings on the terrace will be enchanting, atmospheric, and romantic!

It's just the perfect base for a holiday on this lovely island. Nowhere is that far, yet we're so secluded.

Year we bought the property: 1979

Holiday reviews of Menorca Holiday Villa

Menorca Holiday Villa scored 4.7 out of 5 from 12 reviews...

21st October 2011 by GG, Madrid (STAYED IN SEPTEMBER 2011)

“This villa really is a great place to stay in Menorca because you are close to shops, beaches and restaurants but you are living in a detached property with a large, interesting and well-kept garden, a private swimming pool and in a residential area. You can spend either the morning or afternoon at the property and go out for the rest of the time. It is quiet and equipped to a high standard, including air-conditioning in all the bedrooms, Perfect for a relaxing holiday and in keeping with the the atmosphere on the island in general. One important note, though: a hire car is essential for getting around the sights, beaches, shops and restaurants with the minimum of hassle. All in all, highly recommended.”

15th October 2011 by Ali, Epsom (STAYED IN SEPTEMBER 2011)

“We loved staying at this villa. We were 4 adults and two toddlers. The property was perfect for us. The location of the villa is superb if you are looking for somewhere quiet yet close to 2 towns. We found them within walking distance as they're both about a mile away. The info pack from the owners is second to none and they will do anything to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We would recommend this villa to everyone.”

22nd April 2011 by Linda, Hastings (STAYED IN APRIL 2011)

“This lovely villa is set in a scluded garden at the end of a drive. It is well maintained with everything you could possibly need for a good holiday - an excellent welcome pack, a pool with easy access steps, a barbecue area, even British tv if you want to keep up to date with volcano clouds! The owner's directions made it an easy drive drive from the airport and we would recommend a car to take you into town. It meant that we could easily find and try out the excellent restaurants in Es Castell and Mahon, replensih supplies from the nearby big supermarket or explore the many beautiful sandy bays and beaches around the island. If you want exciting nightlife then you will need to visit Mahon, but we preferred the peace and tranquility of the garden and pool area. We also tried walking part of the coastal bridleway amongst the mass of Spring flowers, enjoying the amazing sea views as we went. The weather in April was wonderfully sunny and we shall certainly be tempted back again. We really do recommend this villa for families or groups of friends of any age.”

22nd August 2010 by Tracy West Sussex (STAYED IN AUGUST 2010)

“Our eighth visit to Menorca and it gets better everytime. What a lovely villa and the owners are very helpful. We couldn't have wished for anything more. Thank you.”
