This ideally located town is a great choice all year round. Protected by the valley of the Verde River, the climate is good with lots of sun and warm winds that blow from North Africa. AlmuƱecar is becoming more and more popular with foreign visitors; even the Spanish residents choose to come here for their holidays.
This is a place that offers lots for the holidaymakers but hasnāt been ruined by tourism. Attractions include the famous Loro Sexi Park, which has over 120 different species of bird and the botanical garden that has subtropical plants mainly from Brazil and Cuba.
For more historical adventures go to the Palacete de la Najarra, which is a small Moorish palace built in the 19th century. Nowadays itās the local tourist office and advice can be given on various days out.
La Rijana sits on top of a headland just below an ancient Moorish tower and looks out over the pool and the sea with breathtaking views across the ocean towards Africa and along the coastline from the bay of Motril, towards Nerja. From the windows and balconies, you can watch sunrise and sunset, follow the fishing boats and at certain times of year, spot dolphins just off the coast.
1 hr from Malaga and Granada airports, AlmuƱecar is the principal town on a part of the southern coast of Andalucia, known as the Costa Tropical, a coast characterised by rugged cliffs falling to the sea and a sub-tropical climate that encourages the growth of chirimoyas, avocados, mangoes and bananas.
AlmuƱecar has the heart of an old Andalucian pueblo. You can see Roman remains of the fish-salting factory, wander through the botanical gardens with nearly 200 varieties of tropical trees from all over the world, (jazz festival in July), visit the bird park, castle, museum, water park, daily market, Friday outdoor market etc.
Almunecar makes a great centre for exploring not just the coast but also the near inland. Fascinating Granada, the last Moorish stronghold, with the fabulous Alhambra and Sierra Nevada skiing, is just an hour away and near here also are the Alpujjaras, made famous by the book 'Driving Over Lemons' and the verdant Lecrin Valley.
In just over an hour, you can also reach the lake at Bermejeles where you can swim and eat at a lovely lakeside restaurant. A few minutes beyond this is the historic Alhama de Granada with hot springs, a deep gorge and fascinating Moorish Quarter.
Of course, the coast too has many interesting sights. SalobreƱa a few miles to the east is built on an outcrop of rock and topped by Moorish fortifications. Beyond this is the interesting Spanish town of Motril, with Los Moriscos golf course next to the sea. To the west of Almunecar is Marina del Este, an exclusive marina with smart restaurants and diving and then Herradura, a small, pleasant coastal resort. Beyond Herradura is Nerja, a popular resort for British holiday-makers, with a good beach (Burriana) and fantastic caves (International festival, featuring ballet, opera, flamenco in July).
Further west is the whitewashed village of Torrox Pueblo and and Torrox Costa, with a very pleasant promenade lined with restaurants and beyond this, 40 mins from Almunecar, is the lovely old town of Velez Malaga and its sister town on the coast - Torre del Mar.
The Costa tropical offers a huge variety of beaches and coves where opportunities exist for diving, windsurfing, paragliding, jet-ski, scuba, snorkelling, fishing, pedalo, nudism or simply sunbathing and swimming. There are 7 beaches at Almunecar and further both east and west, numerous others can be reached down steep cliffs. Riding and golf are also available nearby.
Fiestas and festivals occur throughout the year and you can find out about them from the local tourist office or by visiting: www.almunecar.com
The location of La Rijana, suitable all year round, means that you can combine the tranquillity of gazing across the blue of the Mediterranean with the convenience of being only minutes from the centre of a vibrant Spanish town. You can explore the coastal towns and more remote beaches or head inland to the mountains. And remember - the wonderful city of Granada and the Sierra Nevada ski resort are just a short drive away.
Hi I'm Sheila and with my husband, owner of Bajo La Maroma in Canillas de Aceituno and La Rijana in Almunecar. We're both still working and have 3 children, the eldest two now in London and the youngest in university. So you've guessed my age zone - hence no photo!
We bought the Canillas villa about 15 years ago. We had lived in Peru and spoke an amount of Spanish, and were looking for a holiday home in the sun, where we could take our 3 young children. The villa in Canillas was perfect - in a beautiful setting, with its own pool and far enough away from neighbours not to have to worry about the noise the kids made as they were enjoying themselves in the pool all day long! The traditional whitewashed village of Canillas, just 2 minutes away, was full of charm and character and the people there very friendly.
Time flies and so have the 'kids'- but we still adore going out to the villa. Despite living in a village in UK, there is no silence here that compares with the peace in the Andalucian hills around Canillas.
I love to watch the sun rise over the mountain ((La Maroma) and at the end of the day, take my G+T whilst watching the rocky face of El Penon Grande as it turns rose red in the evening sun. After that, we BBQ, eat outside then maybe watch for shooting stars and take a midnight swim. It is all so beautiful, that every time I have to leave, I hate to do so, and just long for the next trip back!
As the children grew into their middle teens, we realised that they may want a bit more 'action', and we decided to invest in a home by the sea - La Rijana. Here, are combined the peace and tranquility of gazing out to sea with the convenience of bars, restaurants and shopping right on the doorstep! We loved the Costa Tropical with its abundance of bays beneath steep cliffs and chose Almunecar as it was a traditional Spanish town. I leaned from visitin the town's museum, that the history goes back to the Bronze Age and of course there are still reminders of the Romans and the Arabs in the town.
I have become a devotee of the anual summer international jazz festival, followed by a week of flamenco and adore going to my favourite beaches to swim, sunbathe and snorkel. The other things I love, are wandering through the streets of the old town, visiting the bird park and the tropical gardens, and taking advantage of the myriad of restaurants and bars in town or on the beaches.
La Rijana is always my winter retreat, with a chance to sunbathe by the sea and ski, all in the same day!!
