Nestled in the mountains below the Sierra Tejada National reserve, is the picturesque Andalucian village of Canillas de Aceituno, some 60 minutes from Malaga airport and 20 minutes from the coastal town of Torre de Mar. The village has a typically Moorish layout with narrow, winding streets of whitewashed houses, decorated with bougainvillea, jasmine and geraniums.
As our villa is 2km from the village down quite a steep track a car is essential. The last 200m of the road is unmettaled. There is parking at the top of the drive.
In the village, are many small shops and bars, several restaurants and even a disco (or 2). There are lovely views over the village to Lake Vinuela, the mountains and the sea.
The villa offers you the opportunity to explore both inland and coastal Andalucia. More restaurants can be found up in the mountains, by the lake, in the typically Spanish town of Velez Malaga and at a 101 places on the coast in Torre del Mar and beyond.
If you enjoy shopping, markets selling excellent fruit and veg, pottery, clothes, shoes etc can be found at Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga on Thursday. Big supermarkets and a brand new shopping mall with trendy cafes and a 12-screen cinema complex, are to be found 20 mins away in Velez.
If you want a beach, then take your pick according to your needs swimming, fishing, body-boarding, kite surfing, snorkelling, diving, pedalo, jet ski, nudism. The coast is there for you to explore. Why not visit the quiet beaches of the Costa Tropical, down steep cliffs - all within 40 mins? Generally the majority of people on the beach are Spanish.
If you plan on walking, we have a collection of 'Wild Walks' booklets in the villa. If you like birdwatching there's plenty to see around the villa or go to Fuente de Las Piedras and see thousands of flamingos.
Visit the awsome caves at Nerja, walk to a local mill pool for a dip,or drive 10 mins to another pool in the Sierra Tejeda Nature Reserve. Play golf, go riding, go-carting or take the kids to the waterpark, all within 20 mins drive.
Granada and the magnificent Alhambra Palace, is well within reach. On the way, stop at the hot springs just outside the historic town of Alhama de Granada and then proceed to Lake Bermejeles wher you can swim or eat beside the lake. Alternatively, if you go by motorway, you can stop off to watch (and eat) trout at Rio Frio.
If you are lucky enough to be in Spain in July or August, you may catch the Horse Fair, funfair and food fair in Torre or the traditional village Fiestas in Alcaucin or Canillas. July also sees the International Festival at Nerja caves (ballet, opera, flamenco) and the International Jazz Festival in Almunecar. There are many other festivals throughout the year including spectacular Easter processions. You may also like to go on a dolphin ‘safari’ (book ahead), in Gibraltar or a diving course at the coast.
If you enjoy nature, photography, painting or writing, then the world is your oyster. If you just want to sit and relax, you can watch the local shepherds with their goats, and look on to the mountain-sides, covered with grape, almond , citrus and avacados; at night lie back and spot shooting stars.
All in all, if you want peace and tranquillity, with things to do close at hand this is the place for you!
About us
Hi I'm Sheila and with my husband, owner of Bajo La Maroma in Canillas de Aceituno and La Rijana in Almunecar. We're both still working and have 3 children, the eldest two now in London and the youngest in university. So you've guessed my age zone - hence no photo!
What we love about our property
We bought the Canillas villa about 15 years ago. We had lived in Peru and spoke an amount of Spanish, and were looking for a holiday home in the sun, where we could take our 3 young children. The villa in Canillas was perfect - in a beautiful setting, with its own pool and far enough away from neighbours not to have to worry about the noise the kids made as they were enjoying themselves in the pool all day long! The traditional whitewashed village of Canillas, just 2 minutes away, was full of charm and character and the people there very friendly.
Time flies and so have the 'kids'- but we still adore going out to the villa. Despite living in a village in UK, there is no silence here that compares with the peace in the Andalucian hills around Canillas.
I love to watch the sun rise over the mountain ((La Maroma) and at the end of the day, take my G+T whilst watching the rocky face of El Penon Grande as it turns rose red in the evening sun. After that, we BBQ, eat outside then maybe watch for shooting stars and take a midnight swim. It is all so beautiful, that every time I have to leave, I hate to do so, and just long for the next trip back!
As the children grew into their middle teens, we realised that they may want a bit more 'action', and we decided to invest in a home by the sea - La Rijana. Here, are combined the peace and tranquility of gazing out to sea with the convenience of bars, restaurants and shopping right on the doorstep! We loved the Costa Tropical with its abundance of bays beneath steep cliffs and chose Almunecar as it was a traditional Spanish town. I leaned from visitin the town's museum, that the history goes back to the Bronze Age and of course there are still reminders of the Romans and the Arabs in the town.
I have become a devotee of the anual summer international jazz festival, followed by a week of flamenco and adore going to my favourite beaches to swim, sunbathe and snorkel. The other things I love, are wandering through the streets of the old town, visiting the bird park and the tropical gardens, and taking advantage of the myriad of restaurants and bars in town or on the beaches.
La Rijana is always my winter retreat, with a chance to sunbathe by the sea and ski, all in the same day!!
Year we bought the property: 1994

“The perfect place to go for a relaxing short break. Beautiful, secluded location, great pool, and a large villa with everything you could need. We shopped for food before we got here, then stayed put until it was time to leave. If you're looking to relax, enjoy some peace and quiet, occasionally take a dip in the pool and then stare into the distance at some stunning mountain views, look no further.”
Owner's response:

“Spacious villa set in a beautiful, tranquil and private location just outside the small village of Canillas.
We enjoyed our time at the villa, exploring the grounds, relaxing by and in the good sized pool.
The scenery is stunning with the mountain backdrop; it really is a place to unwind.
The local village has some quite good restaurants, but most nights we travelled (25mins) down to the coast for greater variety.
Good location to explore southern Spain, we travelled to Gibraltar and Ronda, both trips worth the 2 hour drive.”
Owner's response: Thanks Chris for your review -We're glad you enjoyed the trip and took the opportunity to do some sightseeing. I must say - I generally tend to go for the lazy option in Summer!
