About Canillas de Aceituno, Inland Andalucia

Nestled in the mountains below the Sierra Tejada National reserve, is the picturesque Andalucian village of Canillas de Aceituno, some 60 minutes from Malaga airport and 20 minutes from the coastal town of Torre de Mar. The village has a typically Moorish layout with narrow, winding streets of whitewashed houses, decorated with bougainvillea, jasmine and geraniums.

Owner's Tips

Our villa is 2km from the village down quite a steep track and a car is essential. The last 200m of the road is unsurfaced. There is parking within the grounds.

In the village, are many small shops and bars and several restaurants. There are lovely views over the village to Lake Vinuela, the mountains and the sea.

If you plan on walking, we have a collection of 'Wild Walks' booklets in the villa. You can walk in the surrounding hills, to the local bat cave and to ancient water sources. If you like birdwatching there's plenty to see around the villa or go to Fuente de Las Piedras and see thousands of flamingos (check first).
Check local websites for traditional village Fiestas, the International Festival at Nerja caves (ballet, opera, flamenco) and the International Jazz Festival in Almunecar. There are many other festivals throughout the year including spectacular Easter processions.

Meet the owners...

About us
Hi I'm Sheila and with my husband, owner of Bajo La Maroma in Canillas de Aceituno and La Rijana in Almunecar. We have 3 children, the eldest two work in finance in London and the youngest about to join them; so you've guessed my age zone - hence no photo!

What we love about our property
We bought the our villa in Canillas de Aceituno about 15 years ago. We had lived in Peru and spoke an amount of Spanish, and were looking for a holiday home in the sun, where we could take our 3 young children. The villa in Canillas was perfect - in a beautiful setting, with its own pool and far enough away from neighbours not to have to worry about the noise the kids made as they played in the pool all day long! The traditional whitewashed village of Canillas, just 2 minutes away, was full of charm and character and the people there very friendly.

Time flies and so have the 'kids'- but we still adore going out to the villa. Despite living in a village in UK, there is no silence there that compares with the peace in the Andalucian hills around Canillas.
I love to see the sun rise over the mountain (La Maroma - the highest in the Axarquia) and at the end of the day, take my G+T and watch as the rocky face of El Penon Grande turns through arange of golden hues, ending rose-red in the evening sun. After that, we BBQ, then maybe watch for shooting stars and take a midnight swim. It is all so beautiful, that every time I have to leave, I hate to do so, and just long for the next trip back!

As the children grew into their middle teens, we thought that they would like to be in a livelier location and so decided to invest in a home by the sea - La Rijana. Here, the peace and tranquility of gazing out to sea and the convenience of bars, restaurants and shopping, are combined. We chose the Costa Tropical for its abundance of bays beneath steep cliffs and Almunecar, as it was an old Spanish town with traditional steep cobbled streets. I learned from visiting the town's museum, that the history goes back to the prehistoric times, with remnants of the Bronze Age, the Romans and the Moors - the latter two still evident in the town and surroundings.

I have become a devotee of the annual summer international jazz festival, followed by a week of flamenco and adore going to my favourite beaches to swim, sunbathe and snorkel. The other things I love, are wandering through the streets of the old town, visiting the bird park and the tropical gardens, and taking advantage of the myriad of restaurants and bars in town or on the beaches.
La Rijana is always my winter retreat, with a chance to sunbathe by the sea and ski, all in the same day!!

Year we bought the property: 2002

“The perfect place to go for a relaxing short break. Beautiful, secluded location, great pool, and a large villa with everything you could need. We shopped for food before we got here, then stayed put until it was time to leave. If you're looking to relax, enjoy some peace and quiet, occasionally take a dip in the pool and then stare into the distance at some stunning mountain views, look no further.”

Owner's response: Muchisimas gracias Matt!
We hope that you may book again.

“a very beautiful spot, views from villa fabulous! not for the nervous driver though, journey to get there a little hairy!though well worth it!!”

Owner's response: Carol - thanks for your review - hope your nerves have recovered from the drive - believe me it's second nature when you get used to it!

9th September 2010 by Chris, Mandy, Cheshire (STAYED IN AUGUST 2010)

“Spacious villa set in a beautiful, tranquil and private location just outside the small village of Canillas.

We enjoyed our time at the villa, exploring the grounds, relaxing by and in the good sized pool.

The scenery is stunning with the mountain backdrop; it really is a place to unwind.

The local village has some quite good restaurants, but most nights we travelled (25mins) down to the coast for greater variety.

Good location to explore southern Spain, we travelled to Gibraltar and Ronda, both trips worth the 2 hour drive.”

Owner's response: Thanks Chris for your review -We're glad you enjoyed the trip and took the opportunity to do some sightseeing. I must say - I generally tend to go for the lazy option in Summer!

28th June 2010 by Carol, Kent (STAYED IN JUNE 2010)

“If you want a relaxing break, in a lovely villa with a fab pool, set in a beautiful rural part of Spain, then look no further. You will love this place.”

Owner's response: Thanks Carol for your very kind review.
