Costa de la Luz Holiday Factsheet
The Costa de la Luz, meaning the 'Coast of Light', extends from the borders of Portugal down to the strait of Gibraltar. The coastline is divided into two sections, covering the provinces of Huelva and Cadiz.
Whilst this area may not be as popular as the famous Costa del Sol, tourism has increased at a steady rate over the past few years. Holidaymakers take advantage of the watersports that are offered in places like Tarifa. Here the cooler temperatures and increased wind around the Atlantic make it ideal conditions to windsurf in. The golden sandy beaches tend to be less crowded than the Costa del Sol as visitor numbers are lower. Even so they are equally as beautiful and are interspersed with small charming white washed towns and villages.
As the Costa de la Luz covers two provinces in Andalucía, there are a number of sights to be seen, the coastline itself stretches some 330km and contains busy tourist resorts as well as smaller beaches with crystal clear waters and fine sandy dunes. The climate can feel cooler than that off the Mediterranean coast due to the wind. Whilst this can be a problem for some, others who enjoy surfing and windsurfing, it’s paradise as the wind speeds can reach quite high levels. However in the evenings, when the sun drops, it’s advisable to have warm clothing on as the wind makes it feels somewhat chilly.
Costa de la Luz is a popular destination for many Spanish as well as the English. Many who live in the cities further inland choose this area to spend the weekends or holidays, which gives the region a more international feel. New developments in Costa de la Luz mean holiday rental property is easy to find and types range from luxury villas through to smaller apartments.
