Smart phones have revolutionised international chit-chat over the past few years. Who wants to thumb through a grubby old phrase book to get directions in the centre of the Paris Metro or order from the menu in a smart Spanish restaurant when you can simply flick on your phone and parlez to pretty much anyone, anywhere?
The hugely popular App iHi Translate (iHiT) from Bath-based developer Alamex revolutionised the worldwide phrasebook market when it launched and exciting updates rolled out this summer mean that the latest version also SPEAKS the phrases you choose to translate. So you can either scroll through the selection of useful phrases and fill the screen with your message, which is particularly useful in busy bars or market places when you simply want to hold up your phone to be understood, or select the T (translate) button and the phone will speak your phrase... perfectly pronounced every time.

No more arm waving or shouting at waiters. iHiT Lite is free on iTunes
The latest version of iHiT lite really does take the electronic phrasebook to the next level. What's more, if you set the base language before you travel you don't need to connect to the internet once you are away. All messages are stored locally on your device and all you need to do is flick between phrases and translations to have a really useful little phrasebook in your pocket at all times. So conversing locally doesn't rely on racking up roaming charges or depending on faraway flickering WiFi. Oh - and did we mention it's free? That's something that translates positively in any language.
Once you have downloaded the App, you can also change the base language of the App in Settings to change the language from which you want to translate, and iHi Translate contains just about every language you need from Afrikaans to Yiddish. You can also upgrade to the full version of iHi Translate and have the ability to add your own phrases and translate them in the same brilliant way. Just type in your words or question, press translate - and away you go.

iHiT Lite has a massive range of languages
If you want to find out more you can check out the user guide and video on the iHi Translate website at www.ihiapp.com/translate
